Sidney Ronald VEASEY1,2

#4358, b. 1926, d. 27 July 1944
Last Edited=27 Apr 2019
Sidney Ronald VEASEY's birth was registered in 1926 in the Shepton Mallet registration district.1 He was the son of Gilbert VEASEY and Rachel WELLSTEAD.1
On 29 September 1939, in the 1939 Register, Gilbert was assumed to be living with his parents in Myrtle Cottage, Shepton Mallet, Somerset. His entry in the Register is redacted, due to age.3
Sidney died on 27 July 1944 in Shepton Mallet Hospital, Shepton Mallet, Somerset.4,5,2 He was buried on 31 July 1944 at the Church of St. Mary Magdalene, Ditcheat, Somerset.2
His death was announced in the Shepton Mallet Journal, Shepton Mallet, Somerset, on 4 August 1944.2 It read:
TRAGIC DEATH OF MR. SIDNEY R. VEASEY.
The whole village was shocked when it learned that Sidney Ronald Veasey, of Myrtle Cottage, Westcombe, third son of Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Veasey, while cycling home was thrown from his cycle. He received concussion, and was conveyed to the Shepton Mallet Hospital, where he passed away without regaining consciousness Thursday morning. The sympathy of the whole parish goes out to the bereaved, parents in their sad loss. Sidney was always happy and smiling lad, and a general favourite with everyone. He was 18 years of age and member of the Home Guard.2

The inquest of his death was reported in the Shepton Mallet Journal, Shepton Mallet, Somerset, on 4 August 1944.2 It read:
THE INQUEST.
Mr. C. Leslie Rutter, the Coroner for South- East Somerset, sharply criticised the action of a 36-years-old motor-cyclist, Arthur Ernest Veasey, of Myrtle Cottage, Westcombe, at the inquest held Shepton Mallet on Friday.
Evidence was given that the deceased was returning from Wanstrow his home at about 11 p.m., on Thursday, last week, riding a pedal cycle. He was being pulled along by his brother, who was riding a motor-cycle, by holding his shoulder. Another pedal cyclist, Anthony William Glacee, of The Beaches, Batcombe Lodge, was holding the other shoulder of the motor cyclist. The latter released his hold near his home at Batcombe, and shortly afterwards the deceased also lost his grip, for no apparent reason. The motor cyclist, turning round saw his brother crash to the ground, receiving severe head injuries. He was attended on the scene by Dr. Brodie, and later removed to the Shepton Mallet District Hospital, where he died the following morning at 8 o'clock.
Replying to questions, the motor-cyclist said he could not account for his brother releasing his hold. They were only travelling slowly, at about 25 miles per hour.
Dr. D. Brodie (Evercreech) said the cause of death was compression of the brain due to internal cerebral hemorhage, resulting from the fall.
Returning a verdict of ''Death by Misadventure" the Coroner said the motor cyclist and the other lads showed an utter lack of responsibility and certainly a lack of citizenship, as well a complete lack of regard for other users of the road. He described their action as a most dangerous and foolish practise.2

His funeral was reported in the Shepton Mallet Journal, Shepton Mallet, Somerset, on 4 August 1944.2 It read:
THE FUNERAL. The funeral took place at the Parish Church of St. Mary's, on Monday, the Rev. J. F. Holt, rector, officiating. The mourners were Mr. Veasey and Mrs. Wheeler, father and sister; Miss Mabel Veasey, sister; Mr. Arthur Veasey, brother; Mr. and Mrs. G. Veasey, brother and sister-in-law; Mr, Michael Veasey, brother; Mr. and Mrs. Dimmock, aunt and uncle; Mr. and Mrs. Lanning, Mrs. Whitehead and Mrs. Collins, Mr. Brickell, and Miss Lanning, Misses G. and L. Maidment, friends. Mr. J. Veasey, brother, serving in the Navy, and Mr, Leonard Veasey (in hospital), were unable to attend. Sidney was given a military funeral by his Home Guard friends, and was taken to church with the Union Jack covering his coffin. The bier was also covered with the lovely flowers of his comrades, who turned out in full strength, under the leadership of Capt. Britten, and Sergt. Priddle. Col. H. G. Spencer, Commanding Officer, was also present at the church. The bearers were : Mr. A. James, Mr. A. Coombs, Sir. T. Baber and Mr. C. Wiltshire (Home Guardsmen). The church and graveside was thronged with sorrowing friends and comrades, who had come to pay respect. The Last Post and Reveille were impressively sounded by a bugler of the Home Guards. There was a profusion of lovely floral tokens numbering over forth.2

His In Memoriam was detailed in the Western Gazette, Yeovil, Somerset, on 9 August 1946.6 It read:
VEASEY - Sweetest memories of our dear Son and Brother, Sydney, suddenly called to rest 27th July, 1944 - Never forgotten by Mum, Dad, Sisters, and Brothers, Westcombe, Batcombe, and Upton Noble.5
