#2718, b. 1 June 1803, d. 20 September 1877
Last Edited=12 Apr 2015
Henry James Isadore GIBBINS was born on 1 June 1803 at Westminster, London. He was one of twelve children born to Samuel GIBBINS (1776-1843) and Mary HATCH.2,1
Henry James Isadore GIBBINS was baptised on 10 July 1803 at St. Martin-in-the-Fields, Westminster, London.2
Henry married Louise Victoire Alphonsine MARCHAND on 8 October 1829 in St. Marylebone Parish Church, St. Marylebone, London. Henry James Gibbins of this parish, bachelor, and Louise Victoire Alphonsine Marchand of this parish, spinster, were married in this church by banns ... Witnesses were D. Marchand and I. Marchand.2
Henry James, and his father Samuel Gibbins were hairdressers. Also Louise's father Simon Marchand, his brothers-in-law Isidore Simon Marchand, and Denis Louis Marchand were hairdressers. Isidore Simon was hairdresser to Queen Victoria from 1838 until 1846. Henry was a Perfumer (H.J. Gibbins & Co), a director of the Prudential Assurance Company, 1866-1877, and a resident of Dulwich, Surrey. In his free time he painted watercolours.2
Henry made a will dated 22 February 1877. and in his will, Henry James Gibbins refers to six children - one son, Jule Isidore Henry, and five daughters: Adèle Victorine, wife of James Uridge; Alphonsine Mary, wife of Francis Symondson; Victorine, wife of Warwick Pett; Elise Pauline, wife of James Stratford, and "my late daughter," Florentine Elise Marchand. The will also refers to Mary Ann Marchand, "widow of my late son-in-law Charles Tony Marchand." There is also mention of Victorine Bardian, the sister of his wife.3
Henry died on 20 September 1877 in Rosendale Lodge, Park Road, Norwood, Surrey, at the age of 74; The cause of death was angina pectoris (11 days).2 The 1877 Will index shows: "The will of Henry James Gibbins, late of Rosendale Lodge, West Dulwich, Surrey, esquire, was proved by Louise Victoire Alphonsine Gibbins, widow, the relict, Jule Isidore Henry Gibbins, esquire, the son, both of Rosendale Lodge, William Hughes of Froyle House, Bedford Hill Road, Balham, Surrey, actuary, and Walter Michelmore Hitchcock of Lynton Villa, Beulah Hill, Upper Norwood, Surrey, merchant, the executors. Effects under £30,000.3" His estate was probated after 20 September 1877.3

Research Note: Henry was the 4th great-grandfather of Matthew Bernard Ward, who is researching the GIBBINS family.1

Research Note: Extensive information on the GIBBINS family, and associated names is available from Humphrey STEAD.2

Research Note: Jane GIBBINS is probably the sister of Henry James GIBBINS, born in Hampshire in 1821. This might explain how Henry's daughter Adèle met James Uridge.4

Francis SYMONDSON1

#2721, b. 1826, d. 1893
Last Edited=17 May 2005
Francis SYMONDSON was born in 1826 in Hoxton, Middlesex.1,2
Francis married Alphonsine Marie GIBBINS, daughter of Henry James Isadore GIBBINS and Louise Victoire Alphonsine MARCHAND, on 12 February 1853. The wedding was a double wedding with her sister Adele Victorine GIBBINS to James URIDGE.3,4
In the 1861 census he is shown living at 7 King Street, St. James Westminster, with the occupation of hairdresser/perfumer. In that census Henry James Gibbins is shown retired, living in Norwood, Surrey but the business is still in the name of Henry James Gibbins and Co, Perfumers until at least 1871 (Kelly's Post Office Directory). Since Francis Symondson's children were born there, at least until 1867, it seems that he continued in the business for some time, perhaps leaving it after his father-in-law's death in 1877.4
Francis was listed as the Head of Household in the census of 2 April 1871 at 7 King Street, St. James, Westminster, London, an Insurance Broker, living with his wife and young daughter.5
In the census of 3 April 1881 at 33 Devonport Road, Hammersmith, London, Francis was listed as the Head of Household; a Merchant's ?Clerk, living with his wife and three of his children.4,2
In the census of 5 April 1891 at 1 Westover Road, London, London, Francis was listed as the Head of Household; living on his own means, with his wife, and two sons.6
Francis's death was registered in 1893 in the Wandsworth registration district.7
