- 3rd great-grandson of Thomas URIDGE
Ernest Albert URIDGE was born on 25 January 1876 in Egham, Surrey.1,2,3,4,5
He was the son of William John URIDGE and Caroline Janette POYNTER.2,4,6
He was baptised on 19 March 1876 at Egham, Surrey.7
Ernest married by license Margaret Laidlaw BLACKHALL, daughter of David BLACKHALL and Elizabeth PERCY, on 22 August 1898 in The Register Office, Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland. He was a Driver in the Royal Artillery, a bachelor aged 22, residing at The Barracks, Newcastle. His father was listed as Ernest Henry Uridge (deceased), a Journeyman Bricklayer. Ernest was also referred to as otherwise Ernest Albert COLEMAN. The marriage was witnessed by Robert BAKER and Isabella PATRICK.8,9,2,10,5
Ernest worked in an ammunition factory and Margaret ran a small corner shop. They lived above the shop at 5 Delaval Road, Benwell, Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland.11
According to a family bible, Ernest was entered into the Latter Day Saints (Mormons) church on 6 October 1907.12
On 8 May 1908, at the time of the birth registration of their son Ernest URIDGE, Ernest and Margaret lived at 14 St. Margarets Road, Hanwell, Middlesex.13
In the census of 2 April 1911 at 73 Westbourne Avenue, Gateshead, Durham, Ernest was listed as aged 35 born in Egham Surrey, the Head of Household; a Corporation Cartman, living with his wife 'Margrate Laidlaw', and their children Caroline Emily, Albert William, May Violet, Gladys Isabella, Ernest, Annie, and David Blackhall. Also listed, but then crossed out and marked 'Dead', was their daughter Margaret Laidlaw Uridge.14
In 1920, they met a Mormon (name unknown) who made Ernest a substantial offer of work, homes and prosperity in Canston, Alberta, Canada. At that time, Ernest had just inherited some property in New Zealand but Margaret did not want to go there. They decided to use the proceeds of the property to make a new start in Canada. He had to make a choice, and now with lots of money behind them, they decided to make a new start in Canada. Travelling second class, they arrived in Montreal, Quebec. However, they could not understand the language. Furthermore, Margaret had a miscarriage and had to be hospitalized. Poor Ernest was stuck looking after seven children in a new land.
They made it to Lethbridge, Alberta, and could not find their Mormon acquaintance anywhere, so they settled there.
Over the years, Ernest made some poor investments. For example, they purchased a horse farm and then could not rent out the house so most of the family ended up living there with them.
In 1932, they ran the Kings Arms Hotel in Lethbridge; the venture succeeded due to Margaret's good business sense.
She became very homesick and returned home five times, sailing on luxury liners, taking some of her small children with her.
In 1938 some of the family decided to travel to Vancouver in search of more work.15
Ernest Albert URIDGE witnessed the marriage of Lona ELASCHUK and Albert William David URIDGE on 2 August 1927 at Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada.16,17
Ernest was in an undated photograph, together with his wife Margaret.18
Ernest died on 28 October 1937, at the age of 61. At the time he was working as a cook for the Canadian Pacific Railroad, at Spencers Bridge, Kamloops, British Columbia, Canada, when he went missing. The cause of death was accidental drowning.
It seems that he had gone to the toilet beside the railroad tracks. However, it was out-of-service, so he went to the river and fell in. They later found his wallet, and watch etc. in the toilet. Although Ernest did not drink excessively, it was understood that he was drunk at the time of the incident.
Margaret, his wife was distraught trying to find him. She and their daughter May rode the street cars looking for him. Anytime they saw someone who looked even a little like him Margaret would jump off the street car and grab him, thinking and hoping it was Ernest.
In 1938, native North Americans found Ernest's body hanging from a tree branch at the edge of the river, close to where he had fallen in.2,16,11,10,5
An incident relating to him being missing was reported in a local newspaper.16,10,11 It read:
Research Note: In the marriage certificate of Ernest, it details that his father was Ernest Henry Uridge (deceased). Additionally, in the marriage certificate, Ernest was otherwise known as Ernest Albert Coleman.2,8
