In the census of 31 March 1901 at 4 Crescent Place, Keymer Urban, Burgess Hill, Sussex, he was listed as a Drapers Assistant, aged 14 born in Burgess Hill, the son of Henry URIDGE; a Drapers Manager, living with his wife Mary J., and children William A., Walter E., and Lilian M.4
In the census of 2 April 1911 at 4 Station Road Villas, Station Road, Burgess Hill, Sussex, he was listed as an Out Fitter, aged 24 born in Keymer, the son of Henry URIDGE.5

In the census of 5 April 1891 at 8 Holmesdale Road, Bromley, Kent, he was listed as the son of Marion URIDGE.7 In the census of 31 March 1901 he was listed as a pupil of Caroline Bailey at a school at 18/20 Breakspears Road, Deptford, London.8,9 Henry URIDGE served in World War I between 1914 and 1918.10

Emily URIDGE was born on 1 July 1890, in the Lewisham registration district.3,2,4 She was the daughter of Richard URIDGE and Emma Marie WHITAKER.5,6 In the census of 5 April 1891 at Perry Rise, Perry Terrace, Lewisham, London, she was listed as aged 9 months born in Forest Hill, the daughter of Richard URIDGE.7 In the census of 31 March 1901 at 1 Bird-in-Hand Road, Sydenham, London, she was listed as aged 10 born in Forest Hill, the daughter of Emma M. URIDGE; a Charwoman, living with her daughter Emily, and son William G.8
Emily married Harry R. TOLER in 1919 in the Croydon registration district.9,10
Emily was in a photograph taken 1921. The photograph was of Emily Toler née Uridge, holding her son John "Jack" William Toler, together with her mother Emma Marie Uridge née Whitaker.11 In the 1926 electorial roll for 205 South Lambeth Road, Lambeth, London, it shows Harry Robert Toler and his wife Emily Toler, and his mother-in-law Emma Marie Uridge, who had died in late 1925.12 Emily died on 28 July 1977 at the age of 87. Her death was registered in the Lambeth registration district.4,2,13

Douglas James Gibbins URIDGE1

     Douglas James Gibbins URIDGE was born on 18 April 1893 at Lewes, Sussex.1,2,3,4,5 He was the son of James Isidore URIDGE and Mary Jane MARTIN.5,3 In the census of 31 March 1901 at "Downside", Kings Henry's Road, St. Johns, Lewes, Sussex, he was listed as the son of James Isidore URIDGE; a retired Farmer and Corndealer, living with his wife, two sons and his niece and two servants.3 Douglas served in World War I. He joined the 30th British Columbia Horse (Canada) in August 1914 and was discharged on account of injuries to the head from a horse kick, before the Regiment sailed for England. When he recovered he paid his own passage back to England. He was rejected nine times before passing the medical examination in March 1916, when he joined the M.T.A.S.C. and was a driver. He was discharged as being no longer physically fit for war service on 4 October 1917.5,6,7
Douglas married Elsie Muriel BROWN on 30 September 1917 in Woolwich, London.8,2,5 Douglas James Gibbins URIDGE and Elsie Muriel BROWN were divorced on 2 July 1923.5

Command of the unit was given to Lt. Col. C.L. Bott, a veteran of the South African War. This regiment, with headquarters in Vernon, consisted of "A" Squadron from Lumby and Coldstream, "B" Squadron from Vernon, and "C" Squadron from Armstrong and Enderby. Later, "D" Squadron was formed to encompass Penticton and Kelowna. At the outbreak of war in 1914, the 30th BC Horse was mobilized and brought up to strength. Orders were received in November that the 30th BC Horse would amalgamate with an independent Squadron of Horse in Victoria to form an overseas unit, the 2nd Canadian Mounted Rifles.
